Using emoji in a survey 😍

Emoji or smileys. We all know them, and use them on a daily basis. No text or Whatsapp message is sent without them, and even in emails they’re becoming more and more prominent.

Whether you’re a lover or a hater, emoji aren’t going away any time soon.

And why not take advantage of these little expressive faces, and use them in surveys? You can add them as answer options in a rating scale, for example, or to add some ‘pizzazz to the question itself. You can also use them in your email invitations, e.g. when you wish to embed the first survey question.

Emoji are handled the same way as regular text. So you don’t have to worry about them not showing up in specific email engines, and you also don’t have to import them first into your media library, which you would have to do if you want to add images to your survey.

Will emoji work everywhere? 🤔

Emoji are treated differently on each device and each operating system. The website http://getemoji.com/ will list the different views when searching for a specific emoji.

There are a few rare cases where an emoji doesn’t work on all devices yet. This will also be indicated on http://getemoji.com/.

Add emoji to answer options

  1. Go to the survey.
  2. Add a new question.
  3. Copy the emoji you wish to use from this Emoji Website.
  4. Paste it in the answer options field.
  5. Click on Save.

By default the emoji will be rather small. You can fix that by changing the font size. When doing so for answer options, add this little piece of html:

<p style="font-size:xxpx; line-height:1">insert emoji here</p>

Change the ‘xx’ to the desired font size, e.g. 30px or 50px

Add emoji to a question

  1. Go to the survey.
  2. Add a new question.
  3. Copy the emoji you wish to use from this Emoji Website.
  4. Paste it in the Question field.
  5. Add the answer options (with or without emoji).
  6. Click on Save.

Again, if you feel the emoji is too smalll, change it with the following bit of HTML:

<p style="font-size:xxpx; line-height:1">insert emoji here</p>

Change the ‘xx’ to the desired font size, e.g. 30px or 50px

In order to do so for questions, first click on < > to open the source code box.

Add emoji to the email invitation

Embedding survey questions requires a bit of HTML knowledge. That’s why we recommend to always start from one of our “embedded survey templates“. You can adjust the first question in the survey as well as in the email invitation so that emoji are used instead of text, and this without necessarily digging into the HTML code. Just make sure to start with a survey template that has the same amount of answer options in the first question as you would like to use in your email. That way the editing efforts will be reduced to a minimum.
  1. Create a new survey from a template. Select the desired “embedded” template.
  2. Edit the first question and add the emoji.
  3. Go to the email invitation.
  4. Paste the used emoji in the embedded question.
  5. Save the email invitation.
